IEC for first-time exporters

· What the Importer Exporter Code is, who needs it, and the bank proof DGFT actually accepts.

An Importer Exporter Code is the PAN-based number DGFT issues for commercial import and export. One PAN gets one IEC. You do not renew it every year the way a licence expires, but DGFT has required holders to update details, so an old IEC can still need attention.

The usual pack is PAN, address proof, a cancelled cheque of the business, and Aadhaar or DSC depending on whether you are a proprietor or a company. The bank account name should match the applicant. That single mismatch causes most deficiencies.

IEC is not a substitute for GST. Exports are often zero-rated under GST, which is a different filing. If you are shipping samples only, ask whether an exemption applies before you pay for a code you will not use.

Our assisted filing starts from INR 1,499/-. Government charges, if DGFT is levying any on the day you apply, are extra and are shown before you pay.
